Settling-In According to the Berlin Model
The settling-in period generally lasts two weeks. This phase allows the child to gradually get used to the new environment, caregivers, and other children. During this time, the child is accompanied by a designated caregiver who provides security, builds a trusting relationship, and helps the child find their place in the group. A parent or familiar caregiver—ideally always the same person—must be present and reachable to ensure a smooth transition.
For the forest group, settling in begins with an initial meeting at the daycare to discuss individual needs and the schedule. On the following day, the caregiver accompanies the child to the forest but remains in the background, allowing the child to explore independently. The approach is adjusted flexibly based on the child’s reactions and well-being, with the goal that the child gradually feels secure and can enjoy time in the forest group without constant accompaniment.
